Provision of Construction Health & Safety Consultancy Services to Nationalgrid & Alstom Grid

Business Need

The England-France Interconnector is a 2,000MW high voltage Direct Current (HVDC) link. The existing link was built in the early 1980s and is divided into two independent 1000 MW bipoles operating at ± 270kV DC. The link connects into the French 400kV system at Les Mandarins and into the British 400kV system at Sellindge. Each bipole is split into two identical 500MW sets of AC to DC converting equipment known as Poles.

The £30m+ project was to refurbish the system to maintain the interconnector for the future.

Our Role

Salus’ role was to manage EHS for Alstom to supplement Alstom UK Ltd EHS Policies and Procedures, which detail the company’s responsibilities towards statutory requirements. The role was to manage the following: –

• The scope of dismantling / installation work.
• The EHS organisation of the Alstom Project Team.
• Associated relevant project documentation.
• The supervision and responsibilities of Contractors and Sub-contractors.
• Risks associated with the work and;
• Ensuring that Alstom personnel and its Contractors working on site are aware of EHS legislative standards and the requirement for total compliance on a live operational National Grid site.

Result

The >5 year project came to a successful completion with Salus playing a pivotal part in the project’s outstanding safety record on a highly demanding and prestigious project.
